Health, Safety and Environment
Our Commitment
At NatureBase, health, safety and environmental management are fundamental to how we plan and deliver every contract - not compliance boxes to tick. We hold recognised external certifications in health and safety management and operate to documented policies that are reviewed and maintained to reflect current best practice and legislative requirements. For councils, schools and organisations working through procurement and tender processes, our certification details and policies are set out below.
Our Certifications
Tōtika
NatureBase holds Tōtika certification - New Zealand's recognised health and safety prequalification standard for contractors working in the public and private sectors. Tōtika provides independent verification that our health and safety management system meets the standards required for contracting work, giving our clients confidence that we operate safely and compliantly on every site.
SiteWise
NatureBase is SiteWise certified - a widely used contractor prequalification system that assesses health and safety capability across documentation, systems, training and performance. SiteWise certification is recognised by many New Zealand councils and organisations as part of their contractor procurement requirements.
CEnvP (Individual Accreditation)
NatureBase's environmental management work is led by a Certified Environmental Practitioner (CEnvP), accredited by the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ). CEnvP accreditation recognises demonstrated competency in environmental practice and a commitment to ongoing professional development - giving our clients confidence that their environmental obligations are in experienced hands.

How We Manage Our Environmental ImpactsEnergy and EmissionsWe maintain our vehicles and equipment to manufacturer standards to maximise fuel efficiency, minimise unnecessary idling and plan routes and site visits efficiently. We consider low-emission or electric equipment options where practical. WasteWe minimise waste through efficient planning and reuse, segregate recyclable materials where facilities allow, and compost, mulch or responsibly dispose of green waste in line with local regulations. WaterWe use efficient watering practices and equipment, adhere to local water restrictions and drought management requirements, and minimise water use during establishment and maintenance works. Hazardous Materials and Spill RiskWe store and handle fuels and oils safely, maintain immediate response procedures for spills, and implement dust control measures and additional environmental controls when working near waterways or sensitive habitats. Raw MaterialsWe use landscaping materials efficiently to reduce waste and select environmentally appropriate products for all works. Biodiversity and CommunityWe are committed to protecting and enhancing biodiversity through native planting, habitat restoration and sustainable landscape management. We work closely with local communities and stakeholders to identify and conserve native plant and animal species, and support community-based environmental programmes that align with our sustainability goals. Accountability and ReviewImplementation of this policy is overseen by NatureBase senior management. The policy is reviewed regularly to reflect changes in our operations, legislation and best practice.
